The Lares Valley trek is another example of a great trek to Machu Picchu. The Lares Trek is a truly fantastic trail that takes you off the beaten track as you leave the Sacred Valley of the Incas and continue on to the next valley: the Lares Valley.
The Lares trek offers an authentic glimpse of life in the Andes, with fewer trekkers around. The Lares Valley is home to several traditional Andean communities that have hardly changed over the last 500 years. As you cross these mountains, you have the opportunity to enjoy spectacular Andean landscapes, including lakes and wildlife, and visit traditional Andean villages. If the main attraction of the Salkantay Trail is the natural beauty that you will find along the way, the Lares Trek is the local people that you will find in the markets, towns and traditional agricultural communities (with herds of alpacas and llamas).
We will leave Cusco and head to Lares at 5:00 am starting this Lares tour to Machu Picchu, by bus. During this trip we will pass several archaeological sites and handicraft markets in the Sacred Valley of the Incas.
The second day is possibly the most beautiful. After breakfast we will start a 4-hour hike to the Ipsay pass (4400m/14436f).
The third day is also spectacular: we will visit several communities and indigenous villages, such as Willoq (3400m/11156f), Pumamarca (3200m/10499f) and Ollantaytambo (2850m/9350f) which is considered the last stronghold of the Incas.
We will leave our hotel after breakfast at 5:30 am and head to Machu Picchu (2400m/7874f) by tourist bus. We will arrive at the citadel around 6:00 am.
